Shirley Raye Farland passed quietly at 6:00 on Friday, September 8, attended by family members at Franciscan Hospice House in University Place. Born on July 12, 1931 in Independence, Kansas to Forest and Edna Fry. Shirley was the middle child of three children. She attended grade school in Kansas City and then when the family moved to Tacoma, she attended and graduated from Lincoln High School. She attended Central Washington State College for a time before meeting her husband of 52 years, James Harold Farland. Shirley was a selfless person who always made her guests feel welcome and put the happiness of her family and friends at the forefront of her efforts. She loved reading and worked for 25 years at the Lakewood Library where she met many of her life-long friends. She was active within the library union and held the office of President for several years. She is survived by her husband James Harold Farland, of Spanaway and her younger sister, Helen Larson, of Longview, stepson, Richard Dean Farland (and wife, Nancy) of Vancouver, daughter Joan Marie Blanchard (and husband, Mark) of Lakewood, and son James Mark Farland of Spanaway. Shirley has 4 grandsons, Aaron and Robert Farland and Nathan and Thomas Blanchard as well as 13 nieces and nephews. We are saddened to add that Shirley’s older brother, Lewis Fry of Puyallup (wife Beverly) passed away, today, only 20 hours after Shirley. Viewing will be possible on Tuesday, September 12, from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at Fir Lane Funeral Home at 964--176th Street East, Spanaway, Washington and a graveside service will be held there, Wednesday, September 13, at 2:00 PM. Shirley requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Franciscan Hospice Home.
