- Petrus grew up in Knysna. He had to leave school before he matriculated due to circumstanses. He worked for Thesens in Knysna and Cape Town, There he studied various subjects during evening classes and by corrspondence. He also completed a Medical course from the USA by correspondence.
In 1907 he moved to SWA (Namibia), his family following later. He returned at the end of 1909 and at the beginning of 1910 until 1915 he was manager of forestry at Strawberryhill in the district of Heidelberg in the Cape. After that he accepted a post as manager of the farm, Doringrivier which belonged to Mr Will Fullard.
He then moved to Barrydale where he was able to put his medical studies to good use because the nearest doctor was in Swellendam. During the flu epidemic he was appointed on the advice of the Doctor in Swellendam as health official of Barrydale. Only 13 people died of flu in Barrydale.
He later moved to Warden in the OFS where he once again put his medical kknowledge to good use because the nearest doctor was in Harrismith. He died in Warden.
