- Bio: Thorvald E. Fiveland passed away July 15, 2005 at his home in Absarokee.
Thorvald was born on the Fiveland homestead on Volney Creek, Nov. 17, 1912, the son of John A. and Gurina Haraldseid Fiveland. He married Jean Early on June 24, 1943, in Livingston.
He was baptized into the Lutheran Church at Weast School in 1913 by Martin Reisanger, who was the traveling minister for the state of Montana. This was prior to the building of St. Olaf Church. Thorvald was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Absarokee.
Thorvald attended Stewart Grade School on Volney Creek, and Hedgesville High School for one year and graduated from Carbon County High School at Red Lodge in 1931.
He received the DeMolay Chevalier degree, and was a life member of Star in the West #40 and Royal Arch #20.
Thorvald was a stockman who took pride in his herd of cattle and sheep. He was the remaining survivor of the group who trailed sheep each summer to a mountain permit on Silver Run.
He served on the Weast Irrigation Ditch Company board, Luther School Board, and St. Olaf Church Council.
He is survived by Jean, his wife of 62 years; daughters, Geraldine Fiveland, Marilyn Weast, Eleanor (Lee) Johnson; son, Terrill (Donna) Fiveland; grandchildren, Marcus Weast, Rebecca (Jeremy) Neibauer, Dale (Janel) Johnson, John Fiveland and Joe Fiveland; great-grandchildren, Madison and Emily Johnson, Hailey and Kaleb Neibauer; first cousins, John Indreland, Gertrude Indreland Albert, and Anita Haraldseid Comstock.
He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Mary Lynn Weast.
Papa, you will be greatly missed, but always remembered.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at St. Olaf Church.
