- Bio: Anthony Lawrence Finstad, 86, passed away at home with his family by his side Oct. 12, 2000.
- Tony was born in Iowa Oct. 9, 1914. Soon after the family moved to Montana. In his teens he "road the rails" to California, worked his way up the coast to Seattle, Wash., and back to Montana.
- In 1934, Tony met and married Emma Erickson in Glasgow and they then moved to Fort Peck to work on the new dam construction project. After completion of the dam Tony and Emma moved to Idaho where he helped construct the Farragutt Naval Base. The family then moved to Seattle where Tony did defense work at the Bremerton Shipyards as a welder.
- After the war the family returned back to Helena where Tony's excellent skills as a handyman launched him into his own flooring business while still maintaining his carpenters union membership. Finstad Flooring has been in the same location for 52 years at the corner of 6th Avenue and Rodney. Finstads always had a hot cup of coffee and a friendly face.
- Tony loved to fish, hunt and explore the back roads of Montana with Emma. Tony always said that Montana is the best place on earth to live. Tony was a great source of history about the state of Montana and a wealth of information and sharp wit on any subject.
- Tony had many friends who appreciated his humor and good nature as well as his generosity in helping others when in need. Both Tony and Emma loved to travel both in camping as well as around the world with a fair amount of time spent at their cabin in Lincoln with many of the family and grandchildren.
- Tony retired in 1987 but never officially retired until Emma agreed to retire in 1992. Tony dearly loved his wife and children.
- Tony is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Emma; sister, Martha Shrock along with numerous nieces and nephews; children: daughter, Annette Finstad of Helena, son, John Finstad (daughter-in-law Bonnie) of Helena, daughter, Donna Finstad of Missoula; grandchildren: Lynnette Nilan, (Tom) of Helena, Stephen Haegele, (Debbie), of Phoenix, Ariz., Mark Haegele, (Nadine) of Kalispell, Mike Haegele, (Donnett) of Helena, Eric Finstad, (Karen) of Billings, Valerie Westfall, (Don) of Dallas, Texas, Terre Hogan, (Doug) of Helena, Mark Williams, (Sue) of Missoula, Anna Bidegaray, (Daniel) of Bozeman, Melanie Williams, (Fred Fauquembergue) of Eugene Ore., David Williams of Los Angeles, Calif., Dirk Williams of Omaha, Neb., Erinn Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; great-grandchildren: Annette and Tony, (Joey) Carter, Jennifer and Adam Haegele, Rachael, Edwin, Eve and Eric Haegele, Katie, Beth and Andy Haegele, Kelli and Michelle Finstad, Daniel and Mark Westfall, Courtney and Lauren Hogan, Nicholas and Andre Bidegaray; great-great-grandchild, Patrick Carter. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Rachael Finstad; sisters, Julia, Thelma and Mae; brothers, Ray, Morris and Larry.
