Jacob Robert Farland, a former All-American world champion fast-pitch softball player, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in a Portland hospital following cancer surgery. He was 73.
- Mr. Farland was born June 20, 1925, in Minneapolis and moved to Vancouver in 1934.
- He was a Vancouver firefighter for 33 years before he retired.
- His wife, Harriet, died in 1990.
- Survivors include one daughter, Gail P. Farland Hansen of Vancouver; one son, Gary R. of Vancouver; one brother, James R. of Spanaway, Wash.; and three grandchildren.
- Mr. Farland, an avid bowler, was a member of the American Legion, Smith-Reynolds Post 14; Veterans of Foreign Wars; and Vancouver Elks Lodge 823. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
- A funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel, followed by burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
