- J.T. "Jay" Egge, son of Julius T.M. and Martha M. (Lundby) Egge, was born June 13, 1927 on a farm in Lincoln County near Sioux Falls, SD. He attended Simmons and Whipple Schools before graduating from Washington High School in 1945. He then farmed southeast of Sioux Falls with his cousin, Clarence Sorum.
- Jay was united in marriage with Dorothy Rasmussen in Clarion, IA on December 26, 1949. He later worked as an automatic transmission mechanic with his brother. Jay and Dorothy established Jay Egge Automatic Service on January 2, 1977. They owned and operated the business until retiring in August of 1990. Jay continued to have a keen interest in the business following his retirement. He also enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing in his retirement years.
- Jay was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. He served as supervisor and later treasurer of the Sioux Falls Township Board for many years. He was currently the chairman of the Springdale Cemetery Board and a member of the Mechanical Advisory Committee at Southeast Technical Institute.
- To honor his work as an owner, builder, driver, sponsor and safety crew member for over 47 years, he was inducted into the Huset's Speedway Hall of Fame on July 29, 2001.
- Jay was a charter member of the Sioux Falls Township Fire Department (now known as the Split Rock Volunteer Fire Department). He served as chief of the department for over 30 years.
- Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy; three daughters, Bonnie Guerre and her husband, David, Plymouth, MN, Darlene Steenholdt and her husband, Terry, Sioux Falls, SD, Marilyn Renback and her husband, Rodney, Harrisburg, SD; three sons, John Egge and his wife, Nyla, Watertown, SD, Alan Egge and his wife, Sharon, rural Yankton, SD, Todd Egge and his wife, Joanne, Brandon, SD; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Steen, Sioux Falls, SD, Corine Carlson, Las Vegas, NV; and a host of other relatives and friends.
- He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marlow, Paul; and seven sisters, Dorothy Nelson, Gladys Evans, Jeanette Waswick, Geneve Clyde, Ella Moon, Helen Obeslo and Frances Morisette.
- Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Grace Lutheran Church following the committal service.
- Jay's family requests that memorials be directed to the Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund or the Volunteer Fire Department of your choice.
