Frederick "Fred" Edward Dissell, 78, Crosby and Noonan, passed away June 10, 2005, at a Crosby nursing home. Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Noonan, with the Rev. Larry Glaeske officiating. Burial was at Assembly of God Cemetery, Noonan, with military honors provided by the James Lumsden American Legion Post No. 243.
- Fred was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Noonan, to Fredrick Henry and Marion Jane (Gochanauer) Dissell. He grew up in the Noonan area with three sisters, Evelyn Sparks, Lila Westlie, Marion McConkey, and a younger brother Orion. All of his siblings preceded him in death. The family saw hardship when Frederick Sr. died prematurely in the early 1940s. At that time, Fred left high school to help support his mother. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at seventeen and served on the USS Alaska at the end of World War II. Fred was very proud of his country and his service and was a Legion member the rest of his life.
- On Nov. 18, 1948, Fred married Avis Nygaard of rural Crosby, and became a member of the large Nygaard clan and an adopted Norwegian. Fred and Avis raised three children; Paulette, Kirk and Kevin in Noonan and later in Center. Fred was a self-educated man, always regretting not completing high school. At one time, he attempted a correspondence course, but time didn't allow him to complete. He was very proud to receive an honorary Veteran's diploma in 2003.
- Fred was also very proud of his association with Baukol Noonan Coal Company. He began working as an equipment operator in the late 40s and was Superintendent of the Center Mine when in 1973, a traumatic head injury occurred at work, and changed his life and his family's lives forever. Fred was considered "vegetative" and terminal by most medical experts, after three brain surgeries that summer, but went on to live and amaze all who knew him. He spent some time at the Soaring Eagle Head Injury Ranch at Valley City, where he made many friends. He lived to be a proud and loving Grandpa to Jennifer Lynn, Jennifer Lee and Crystal, Eric and Ashley. He lived to know his great-grandchildren Kristopher, Ben and Levi. He was loved and respected by his daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, Gwendy, Terri, Steve, Reina, Rick and Rod. Those of us who knew him, will miss him always.
- Condolences may be sent to Stakston-Martin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 151, Crosby, N.D. 58730.
