- Born May 31st, 1916 on the island of Karmoy, Norway, in the town of Ferkingstad, the thirteenth of fourteen children to Didrik Jorgensen & Inger Serina Ferkingstad.
- Olav grew up with 7 brothers; Jorgen, Jonas, Karl, Arne, Sigurd, Egil, Magne, and 5 sisters; Borgny, Olaug, Ingrid, Dagny, and Astrid. They didn't have very much but were happy young people. His parents brought them up on Christian beliefs. When he was growing up he looked like his grandchildren and had curly hair. His first job was working on the family farm.
- He went to grade school, middle school, business college and carpenter trade school. He was 23 when WWII started. Norway was occupied by the Germans and kept prisoners of war on his island in a concentration camp. He ran a grocery store on the island and would sneak food to the prisoners. He would deliver notes to people scheming against Hitler by riding his bike 15 miles to Haugesund with notes in his sock. He was scared but knew he was doing the right thing.
- In early 1940 Olav accepted the Lord Jesus as his savior. He also noticed Ellen Langaker, "She was young, blonde and good looking!" They dated for 4 years and were married on July 10, 1944. They had a son and daughter in Norway; Dagfinn, named after his father, born August 3, 1945, and Eva, named after Ellen's mother, born September 14, 1951.
- The family moved to America In 1952 because Olav believed in the American dream. To support his family in Seattle he worked summers in Alaska as a salmon fisherman with his brother, Arne, and others and as a carpenter for the rest of the year. (He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local #131 for 55 years.) They had a third child, Norman, born July 27, 1960. They attended Rock of Ages Lutheran Brethren Church in Seattle and were also members of the Karmoy Club.
- Olav enjoyed camping and traveling with his family. Olav and Ellen loved to entertain and those attending were always treated like royalty and graced with Olav's sense of humor.
- The people who influenced him the most were his teachers and the religious classes he took. The person he admired most was Prime Minister Winston Churchill for making peace in the world. His favorite people are all of his grandchildren because "I love them all!" Thinking positive kept him happy and a joy to be with. He wanted his grandchildren to know the Bible verse; "Fear not, I have redeemed you, I have called you by name and you are mine." Isaiah 43:14
- Olav peacefully went home to be with the Lord on July 20th, 2009 at the young age of 93 at least he had made it look young to us. His life was a testimony of God's love which he continually shared with all who knew him usually with a nudge and a nod to make sure we were smiling.
- Olav is survived by Ellen, his treasured, loving wife of 64 years and three children and spouses, 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren [survivors names omitted].
