- Donovan Lee Colby was born June 20, 1927, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Glenn E. and Odelia (Dyvig) Colby.
- Don lived in Valley Springs, S.D. until the age of 11 when his parents moved to Avon, S.D. Don attended Avon Public School graduating in 1945.
- He served in the U.S. Army during WW II from September of 1945 to February of 1947. Don was stationed in Germany at the Headquarters USFET as a courier.
- Don was married to Norma Kramer on June 8, 1951, in Avon, S.D. They lived in Rapid City, S.D., and several other cities during the time he worked for the Denver Post. They moved to Gering in 1979, then to Aurora in January of 2004 to be near family.
- Don was a member of the American Legion, the D.A.V. and the United Methodist Church of Aurora.
