- Bio: Kern Michael Cavanaugh
- February 21, 1943 - October 14, 2018
- Born in Port Angeles, Wash., to James Harvard and Myrtle Margaret (Puryear) Cavanaugh, Kern was the second of three boys.
- With family by his side, Kern passed away peacefully in his home Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, after an 18-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. Welcoming his arrival in heaven are both of his parents, his younger brother, Timothy J., his best friend, Dick Girt, and other dear friends too numerous to count.
- The James H. Cavanaugh Family moved to the Portland area in 1949. Kern eventually attended Beaverton High School where he fell for the love of his life, Sharon. After High School he joined the Navy and took Sharon's hand in marriage and a union that would far surpass the 56 years they celebrated this year; as theirs is a forever kind of love.
- The first of their three daughters, Kimberly, was born while Kern was stationed in Honolulu Hawaii during the Vietnam War.
- After serving his country, Kern was honorably discharged and moved his family back to the mainland where they eventually had two more daughters, Karin and then Kathleen, completing their beautiful family of five.
- Not only a devoted husband and father, Kern was also a successful businessman, entrepreneur and a man of many interests. When Kern wasn't working he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and riding horses; building and fixing pretty much anything; playing poker and cribbage and spending time with his abundance of friends.
- Kern was a playful and fun-loving man whose witty sarcasm often had the room in a good belly laugh! He was a genuine soul and a man with much integrity and respect for others. You would not have to look far to find someone who, at some point in their life, was touched by Kern's kind-hearted nature and penchant for helping people get a "leg up" in some form or another.
- Kern is survived by his wife, Sharon; his three daughters, Kimberly, Karin and Kathleen; his older brother, Patrick; his grandchildren, Kelsey, Hunter and Gordon Jr.; and his great-grandchildren, Noah, Finnegan and Oliver.
- The family will be holding a Celebration of Life in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or Parkinson's Resource of Oregon.
