- Bio: Lee Boyd, 68Lee James Boyd, 68, Willmar, formerly of Spearfish, South Dakota, died Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Bethesda Pleasant View Care Center in Willmar. Lee was born in Alexandria to Magel and Jim Boyd on July 31, 1946. He attended school in Alexandria, graduating from Jefferson High School. He attended and graduated from the Minnesota School of Business and the University of Minnesota with a degree in recreational leadership. He also graduated in San Diego with a degree in landscaping. His first job was at Darling Dude Ranch, now Arrowwood, in Alexandria. He loved the ranch, the people and the horses. He built the riding arena at the ranch. After college he worked for a boys ranch, Merck Corporation, Dynamic Homes, Willmar Poultry, and the Marriott Hotel in San Diego. Lee loved the outdoors, especially spending time with his horses and husky dog team. While living in Spearfish, he daily walked the Spearfish Canyon until he suffered a stroke and had encephalitis in 2012. After his illness, he moved to Pleasant View Care Center in Willmar to be closer to family. The sign on his door read: Lee Boyd. Important Things: Landscaping, My Faith, Family, Spearfish, SD, Horses, Drawing. Family: two children, Jennifer and Chris. He also loved John Wayne movies, especially "The Cowboys," which he watched daily at the care center. He loved playing guitar and singing "Jambalaya" to his children. Faith was important to Lee. He was baptized and confirmed at First Congregational Church in Alexandria. In adult years, Lee was an active member of St. Peter's By the Sea in San Diego, CA and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish. When Lee moved to Willmar, he became a member of Vinje Lutheran Church. Lee has two children whom he deeply loved: Jennifer (Christopher Doyle) of Sante Fe, NM and Chris Boyd of Bremerton, WA. Lee married Bonnie Smith. Later, they were divorced. Lee is survived by his children; his sisters, Mary Hovland and Anne (Sherm Bartz); nephews and their families, Dan and Kris Hovland, Lauren and Cameron; Lyle and Jill Hovland, Bailey, Tate, and Cayle, and Scott and Jen Hovland, Avery and Alec. Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Magel and H. James Boyd; and his brother in law, Leon Hovland. May God bless the memory of Lee James Boyd. Lee would want to thank his family, friends, fellow church members, pastors over the years, and caregivers at Pleasant View Care Center for their loving care and for walking the journey of life with him. His funeral will be held Friday, December 5 at 11 a.m. at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish, South Dakota.
