- Bio: Richard I. Black, Owatonna resident for 55 years, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, MN.Dick was born on September 22, 1922, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He graduated from Ft. Dodge High School. He enlisted with the U.S. army and served as a medic on the front lines in the pacific theater during World War II.He wrestled for Iowa State Teacher''s College and graduated in 1949. Dick married the love of his life, Jayne Kulild on November 27, 1946. Dick and Jayne were blessed with four children, Dianne (Pat) Stewart, Donna (Charlie) Rohrer, Richard Dean Black, and their niece, Jennie King. Dick and Jayne started their life together in Britt, Iowa, moved to Carroll, Iowa, and eventually settled in Owatonna, MN in 1955. Dick coached wrestling, football, golf, and taught industrial arts and driver''s education at Owatonna Senior High School during his 30 year career with the Owatonna Public School System. Dick was also the golf pro at the Owatonna Country Club. The Owatonna wrestling program attained state and national prominence under his direction. He was inducted into six Halls of Fame as a wrestler and a coach and had the honor of coaching the 1962 perfect season Owatonna Wrestling State Champion team. He attended the State Wrestling Championship Tournament for 61 straight years. The night before his death he cheered on great wrestling with his family at the 2010 state tournament. Dick is survived by his children and ten grandchildren, Angie (Mike) Zagorksi, Sara (Josh) Tuchscherer, Jill (Lance) Glosemeyer, Kari (Scott) Campbell, Kirsti (Zack) Wenner, Jeff (Nikki) Stewart, Kaaryn (David) Cooper, Chad (Brigitte) King, Gina (Jamie) Johnson, and Aaron King. At the time of his death, Dick had 14 great-grandchildren, Mia, Owen, Sam, Greta, Ava, Theo, Bode, Max, Eli, Evelyn, Isla, Marin, Keely, and Gabriel. Dick also leaves behind his sisters, Millie (Ralph) Ewing and Nancy (Mike) Bokota, and brother David (Dottie) Church, extended family and his special friend and long-time companion, Elly Harris. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Jayne, his parents, two brothers Alex (Jerry) and Rodney (Irene) Black and sister, Geraldine (Herb) Bennett.Dick was an avid gardener. Like his garden, Dick tended carefully to his beloved family and was always pleased to see it grow. A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10th at Michaelson Funeral Home, 1930 Austin Road, Owatonna, MN and one hour prior to the service at church. Funeral service and a celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. on March 11th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 609 Lincoln Avenue, Owatonna, MN with Reverend Julie Malone officiating.
