- Bio: Russel J. Benson, 84, of Sandwich, Illinois formerly of Leland, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2005 in Provena-Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora, IL. He was born October 12, 1920 in Earlville, IL the son of Stanley and Mabel (Kirkhus) Benson. He married Phyllis Knutson on May 17, 1942 in Lee, IL.
Russel was a graduate of Rollo High School and Northern Illinois University. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp. He was a civilian instructor for the Air Force at Chanute Field in Rantoul, IL.
He was employed by Martin-Marietta working on the Titan missle project in Denver, CO and Vandenburg Air Force Base in CA.
He taught industrial arts at Leland High School while also farming north of Leland for many years, retiring in 1980.
He was a 50-year member of the Sandwich Moose Lodge #1016, a member of DeKalb County Farm Bureau and the Mendota Elks Lodge #1212. He was an avid golfer at Edgebrook Country Club in Sandwich.
Private Funeral services will be held at the Turner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL. Burial will follow in Leland Cemetery, Leland, IL. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 7, 2005 in the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; three daughters, Connie (Chuck) Kross of DeKalb, IL, Barb (Ken) Johnson of Yorkville, IL and Joni (Alan) Koehler of Aurora, IL; eight grandchildren, Christy Cordt, Corey Zabukover, Greg, T.J. and Matthew Johnson, Andy, Jake and Ben Koehler; two great grandchildren, Drew and Evan Cordt; one nephew, Stan (Linda) Benson of Sandwich, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Leo S. Benson.
