- Hon var förlamad vid födseln (hon var en sätesbjudning födelse), då barnmorskan drog benen från sina hålor. De har aldrig läkt ordentligt, och hon gick med en svår hälta hela sitt liv. Enligt juni 1900 folkräkningen, var Carrie arbetade som piga i den närliggande byn Big Grove i Kendall County, Illinois. Hennes make Garrett W. Smith arbetade med sin äldre bror Edwin i en kornhiss några miles bort i Fox församlingen. De gifte sig i Newark, Illinois den 19 februari 1903. De flyttade till Meadow Valley, Wisconsin inom några år där de arbetade på en gård och hade deras enda barn, Ruth Luna Smith, som föddes 3 augusti 1905. Det sägs att Ruth var känd som deras "lilla mirakel" som Carrie aldrig förväntas kunna föda barn, och hon nästan dog i barnsäng. År 1906 flyttade de till Bricelyn, Minnesota, där de bodde i 26 år. 1932 flyttade de med Ramstad familjen till Braham, Minnesota, och 1938 till Osseo, där Garrett hjälpte sin son-in-law driva sin gas och bensinstation verksamhet (efter att de förlorat gården under depressionen). Carrie Oakland Smith avled den 8 feb 1941 av magcancer i Osseo, MN vid en ålder av 59. Hon begravas på Niggler kyrkogården där.

MRS. G.W. SMITH BURIED WEDNESDAY
Mr. Garrett W. [Carrie Oakland] Smith was born in Romsdahlen, Norway, the daughter of Philip and Bertha Oakland on September 22, 1881, and passed away at her home in Osseo on February 8, 1941 at the age of 59 years, four months and 16 days, following an illness of several months.
At the age of three she, together with her parents and brothers and sisters immigrated to America and settled in Illinois. On February 1903 she was united in marriage with Garrett W. Smith of Millington, Illinois, at her home in Newark, Illinois. To this union one child was born.
Soon after their marriage they moved to Tomah, Wisconsin, where they lived for four years. From here they went to Bricelyn, Minnesota and lived there for 25 years. In 1932 they with their daughter and her family moved to Braham, Minnesota and in 1938 came to Osseo.
Mrs. Smith grew up in a Christian home and never lost sight of the teachings of her childhood. She was baptized in the Norwegian Lutheran church in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Newark, Illinois at the age of 14. She attended the Lutheran church at Bricelyn and was at the time of her death of the Augustana Lutheran church of Grasston, Minnesota.
During her residence in Osseo she attended both the Lutheran and Methodist churches. At the time of her death she was a member of the Osseo R.N.A.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Myrl P. (Ruth) Ramstad; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas M. (Rachel) Thompson of Rochester, Minnesota, and Mrs. Christ (Bertha) Steffens of Lake Mills, Iowa; two brother, Henry D. Oakland of Maywood, Illinois, and Philip Oakland of Morris, Illinois; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. All her brothers and sisters and a number of other relatives visited her during her last illness. She received a great deal of happiness and comfort from these visits.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, February 12th by Rev. E.B. Cooney in the Osseo Methodist church. He was assisted by Rev. T.G. Wicks, Lutheran pastor from Ruthven, Iowa, a nephew-in-law of the deceased. Interment was in the Niggler Cemetery.
