- Bio:
Merlin was born in a farmhouse in Bradish, Nebraska.*
- He married Hope Lucille Beal on August 2, 1943 in Albion, Nebraska. Merlin entered the U.S. Army on October 5, 1942 and served our country as a medic in Patton's 3rd Army during WWII, receiving five Bronze Stars and he was discharged on October 29, 1945.
- He worked as a mechanic for several different companies during his life: Chevrolet Garage and Ford Garage in Tilden, NE for 13 years; Delco Remy in Anderson, Indiana; and Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Noblesville, IN.
- He moved to Roseburg in 1964 and worked for U.S. Plywood/Champion International as a forklift mechanic for 22 years. He retired and moved to Florence and managed the Jessie Jones Odd Fellows Campground for two and a half years. He was a life member of the Odd Fellows lodge, a life member of VFW Post #2468, a member of the Masonic lodge and a Shriner. He was a great husband, father, and friend to all.
- He married Eleanor Harris on January 14, 1996 in Las Vegas.
- Merlin and Hope had four children.
- He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Vancouver, WA; his sons, Michael and wife, Gloria of Tremonton, UT; Mark and wife, Linda of Roseburg; daughter, Mary and husband, Woody Widseth of Renton, WA; grandsons, Mikkel, Lee, Zachary Thompson and Chase Gordon; granddaughters, Laura, Lindsay and Angie Thompson; great-grandchildren, Micah and Amnestie; step-grandchildren, Heather Widseth and husband, Hart Wilson; Elizabeth Widseth and husband, Dennis Yarnell; step great-grandchildren, Trevor Yarnell and Irulan Wilson; stepchildren, Dick and Janie Harris, Tom and Judy Harris, Linda and Robert Flansburg and Ken and Bonnie Harris, along with 14 step-grandchildren and 17 step great-grandchildren.
- He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Hope; his son, Leslie; daughter-in-law, Julie; sisters, Ida and Janet; and brothers, Tilman, Earl and Harold.
- Merlin was a patriot of the highest level for he so loved his country. He could still fit into his uniform. He is laid to rest amongst those he served with at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR.

- *Bradish is now an abandoned town which was built on the Chicago and Northwestern rail line just four miles east of Albion. At one time the village had a depot, grain elevator, two stores, a bank, and a gas station. A number of fires and its proximity to Albion brought an end to
this little village.
