At a young age he moved with his family to Yankton, SD and then to Sioux Falls, SD. After finishing 8th grade at Whittier School, Guy began work with the Great Northern Railroad to help support his family. Guy entered the U.S. Army on March 27, 1951 in Sioux Falls. He proudly served in Korea during the Korean War. He would often remind his grandchildren that “Freedom is not Free”. Guy was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on March 11, 1953 at Camp Carson, CO. He then returned to South Dakota. Guy began work as an electrician and spent most of his career working through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #426. While working in Centerville, SD, Guy met the love of his life, Alice Bak. The couple was united in marriage on May 10, 1957 in Centerville. To this union one daughter was born, Nona. They made their home in Sioux Falls. Except for a short time in the late 1950s working as a packer at Old Home Bakery, Guy continued his career as an electrician. Poor health forced his retirement in 1985. In addition to the I.B.E.W., Guy was a member of East Side Lutheran Church and VFW Post 628. Guy loved to fish, and spent countless hours enjoying the sport on the shores of the Missouri River. He volunteered at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center. He also enjoyed the new friends he spent time with at Day Break during the last several months. He was proud of both his Lakota and Norwegian heritage. Above all, Guy cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Guy was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth; and two sisters, Jeanette Thompson and Wanita Hayne. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
