- Elaine Marie Soma was born August 15, 1925 in Aurora County, Plankinton, SD to Ole and Grace (Hommersand) Soma. She attended country grade schools and graduated as valedictorian from Hopper Consolidated High School.
- She was united in marriage to Marvin I. Espedal on May 29th, 1943. They farmed in Aurora County for 42 years until Marvin retired from farming and they bought a home in Mt. Vernon, SD. In 2009 they sold their home and moved to Countryside Living in Mitchell, SD where they resided until Marvin’s death in January 2014 and Elaine’s move to Firesteel Healthcare Center in May, 2014.
- Elaine had been a teacher’s aide at Hopper grade school and a cook at the Plankinton School for many years. She had been active with the Hopper School Alumni, Sons of Norway and the Garden Club in Mitchell. She was a lifetime member of Salem Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon, SD and was active in Ladies Aid and Bible studies.
- Elaine was an excellent cook and loved to make her famous lefse for family and friends at Christmas time. She loved to sew, cross-stitch and crochet. She tried to make as many crocheted afghans for her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids as she could before her hands gave out and she could no longer make them. Each and every one was made with love. She also had a passion for auctions and was an avid collector of Fostoria and other pieces of beautiful glassware and china.
- She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers Richard, Howard, Merrill and Robert Lee and sisters, Ardis Peake, Myrna Johnson and Norma Jean Bernstein and granddaughters Dana Espedal and Kari Baker and son-in-law, Tom Young.
