- Bio: A quiet and gentle soul left this earth on Monday, October 17, 2011. Ohmar "Nicky" Solem, age 93, of Astoria, South Dakota passed away in the Hendricks Nursing Home in Hendricks MN. Ohmar "Nicky" Arnold Solem was born on January 21, 1918 to Iver and Anna (Westmoe) Solem on the family farm near Astoria. Nicky attended District #71 school near Astoria and graduated as Valedictorian in 1935 from Astoria High School. Following his graduation, he lived and worked on the family farm.On September 30, 1950, Nicky was united in marriage to Leona Hinderaker at the Bethleham Lutheran Church near Astoria. To this union two children were born. They remained lving and working the family farm until 2001 when they moved to Astoria. Leona passed away on October 7, 2008. Nicky lived in the apartment in Astoria for the next couple of years, spending winter and spring with Natalie and her family in Wisconsin. He moved to Lincoln Lane in August 2010 and went to the nursing home in December 2010 where he remained until his death. He passed away peacefully on Monday, October 17 at the age of 93 years, 8 months and 26 days.Nicky was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Astoria. He enjoyed playing baseball starting at the age of 15 and he was one of the premier pitchers in the area. He continued to play until the age of 46. He also served for several years on the Astoria School Board and was involved with the Green Thumb Program from 1992 – 2002. He enjoyed reading westerns and mysteries, he did crossword puzzles in pen and he almost always knew the answer for "Final Jeopardy." He was intelligent, witty and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and he will be missed.
