- Bio: Margaret (Nelsen-Miler) Havlicek was born to Oscar and Mildred Snortland in Ferndale, WA, where she lived until moving to Yakima, WA at age 12. She performed as a featured vocalist in the Northwest for many years using the stage name Margaret Carroll. She is also an accomplished pianist and bass player and a lifetime member of Local 99, Musicians’ Union, AFL/CIO. She first performed on radio in Yakima, then came to Portland in 1943. She sang as the featured vocalist with the radio KOIN orchestra and with the Jerry Van Hoomison Orchestra for many years, performing at the Portland USO, while working at the WISCO shipyard tool shop during WWII. She also performed at the Astoria Salmon Derby, Pendleton Round Up and many other festivals in the Northwest. Margaret married Donald Nelsen in 1944 and they had five children together. In 1964, she married Carl Miler, with whom she had two more children. In the 1960’s she performed in Las Vegas at the Fremont piano bar at Palace Station Casino. Margaret married Theodore “Ted” Havlicek in 1998. In recent years, she performed numerous engagements throughout the Northwest, including The City of Hope benefit in Seattle; Queen of the West Columbia Cruise Ship with the Let’s Dance Band; Portland, OR Hilton Hotel Pettygrove Room; Portland Rose Festival Ball with the Ted Lee Orchestra; and the Sandy, OR Mountain Festival. During her retirement years she traveled extensively with her husband, Ted, sang with the Providence Hospital Dance Band, and was regularly invited to sing with Don Ho when in Honolulu. She also worked with small music combos when wintering in Florida in the Cape Canaveral area. Margaret is survived by her husband and six of her children: Donald Nelsen, David Nelsen, Claire Herbst (John), Douglas Nelsen (Jan), Kari Miler, and Carl Miler Jr. (Molly); eleven grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren, three nieces, and three nephews. She is preceded in death by her daughter Carol Hayes.
