- Obituary: Garrett W. Smith (1869-1954)
Garrett W. Smith was born near Millington, Illinois, February 2, 1869, a son of Darius Smith and Margaret Englehaupt Smith. His father died at an early age following service in the Civil War, leaving his widow and six children. Garrett and his younger brother were brought up on the farm of their maternal grandparents near Millington. All of his family have preceded him in death.
He married Carrie Oakland of Newark, Illinois, in 1903. They moved to Meadow Valley, Wisconsin where their only child, Ruth , Mrs. M.P. Ramstad of Annandale, was born. In 1906 they moved to Bricelyn, Minnesota, where they lived for 26 years. In 1932 they moved with the Ramstad family to Braham, Minnesota, and in 1938 to Osseo, where he helped his son-in-law operate his business. Mrs. Smith died in 1941 in Osseo.
Mr. Smith was always avidly interested in civic affairs, young people, and outdoor sports. He served for several years as president of the Farm Bureau near Bricelyn; was chairman of World War I bond drive; an officer in the Woodman Lodge; a member of Bricelyn Volunteer Fire Dept; managed young boys' baseball teams. In Osseo, he served as president of the Townsend Club, many years; was a member of the Sportsman's Club, and an active worker for the Osseo Recreation Association.
In October 1949, he moved, with his daughter and family to a farm near Annandale, where he passed away on Friday, January 15, 1954, a few days before his 85th birthday. Mr. Smith had been ill for the last two months. He was a member of the Millington, Illinois, Methodist Church since an early age, and was a lifelong Methodist. At his death he was a member of the Osseo church.
Funeral services were held at the Annandale Methodist church, Monday, January 18, 1954. Rev. Edwin Bissell officiated. Favorite hymns of Mr. Smith, "Abide With Me" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" were sung by the choir, organist was Elwn Nordberg. Pallbearers were Lewis Kuhnley, Melvin Wells, Alfred Broten, Charles Geardink, Elmer Schroeder, and Lyman Random. Interment was in Niggler Cemetery, Osseo.
Survivors are his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. M.P. Ramstad, grandchildren Peggy and Peter, two nephews, three nieces, and a host of friends.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Mehl of Frost, Minnesota, Miss Beverly Ford of Minneapolis, and a large number of friends from Osseo.
