- Orlin was born on December 22, 1918 in Roslyn, South Dakota to Ole and Ida (Rue) Smedstad. The family moved to Silverton when he was 17. He served his country in the US Army during WWII, stationed in Italy. Orlin married Oriet Moen in 1943. She preceded him in death in 1993. On Nov. 4, 1995 Orlin married Vi Benda at Montevideo, MN. Orlin worked for the Oregon State Highway Dept. from which he retired in 1979. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Silverton, OR where he served many years on the church council. Orlin and Oriet were longtime members of the Sons of Norway. He was a kind and loving husband and father who loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved being involved in his church and also liked traveling and visiting friends and relatives across the country, dancing, reading and making lefsa. Orlin died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. He is survived by his wife, Vi Smedstad of St. James, MN; daughter, Beverly Hedeen of Independence, OR; sons, Darrel Smedstad of Brookings, OR, and Roger Smedstad of Silverton, OR; step-children Beverly Gehman of Edgemont, SD, Lana Lynn of Salinas, CA, Sherry Kilker of Britton, SD, Anthony Benda of White River, SD, Debbie Ludwig of Dundas, MN, and Kathy Aguilar of Carona, CA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eleven step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Oriet, and a brother, Gerald Smedstad. Contributions can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 500 N. 2nd St. Silverton, OR 97381. Services are Tuesday, May 18,11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Silverton
