- Bio: W. Lyman Skiles of Bellevue passed away peacefully on Sunday night, April 7th, 2013 at the age of 92. He was a patient at Mission Health Care for the past 4 1/2 years.
- Lyman was born February 25th, 1921 to Walter Lyman Skiles, Sr. and his wife Edna Knudsen Skiles in Bellingham, Washington. They moved to Sunnyside, Washington where Lyman spent most of his school years, graduating from Sunnyside High School in 1939. At the beginning of the Second World War, Lyman enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific fighting the Japanese for four years. He came home with an Honorable Discharge from the Navy on January 2nd, 1946. That very month he met the love of his life in church, Rhoda Klatt of Waverly, Iowa. After a brief courtship, they got married on July 26th, 1946. Rhoda and Lyman were blessed with two children, Mark, born on January 22nd, 1952, and Susan on October 14th, 1954.
- Lyman used his G.I. Bill to obtain a degree at the Kansas City School of Watchmaking. He and his brother Roland opened up Skiles' Jewelers in Sunnyside, Washington in 1947.
- In 1955, Lyman, Rhoda and their children moved to Seattle due to issues with Mark's health. That was the best move they ever made because Mark became healthy for the first time in his life. They lived in the Bellevue/Kirkland area and Lyman found work with the Lily Tulip Cup Corporation. Eventually he was even made the Division Sales Manager of the seven western states. He and Rhoda opened a Dairy Queen restaurant in Portland, Oregon and he also worked six years for the Seattle Times before retiring.
- Lyman enjoyed his grandchildren, played golf, and loved big band music, reading and the movies.
- Preceding Lyman in death were his father and mother, his brothers Roland and Keith, and his daughter Susan Carlson. Lyman is survived by his wife Rhoda of 66 years, son Mark, grandsons Corey, Jamie, Bill and Rob, granddaughters Becky and Adriana, great-grandson Rylan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
