- Bio: Obituary for Thelma Rebecca Hilgert
Thelma Rebecca Hilgert passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019.
- Thelma was born on January 21, 1927 in Fillmore County, Minnesota, at home during a blizzard. Her family moved to a farm in Wescoy Valley, Winona County, Minnesota when she was 6. She had two older siblings, James and Marcella, and one younger sister, Ione. She graduated from Rushford High School in 1944. Wilbert Hilgert played in a traveling oompa band, and Thelma and Will met at a dance where Will's band was performing. They married on October 5, 1946.
- She lived in St. Paul and Winona, Minnesota, both before and after marriage. Together, she and Will owed and operated a grocery store in Minnesota. They had two children: Patricia and Jerry. In almost 52 years of marriage, they lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Arizona, and California. They moved to Sunnyvale, California in June 1966. She was employed doing secretarial work most of working years. She retired from Kaiser Electronics in Palo Alto, California in 1977.
- Will retired and they moved from Sunnyvale to Atwater, California in 1983. She was active in many church groups, art and craft organizations, senior clubs, travel groups, etc. They enjoyed traveling as much as possible. She saw Europe, Scandinavia, Greece, Israel, Alaska, and most of the US. She enjoyed traveling, visiting family, keeping up with life long friends, painting and collecting angels.
- Thelma survived the loss of many of her loved ones. Her son, Jerry Hilgert, died August 14, 1991. Her husband, Wilbert Hilgert, died June 8, 1998. Her granddaughter, Christie Freitas, died November 18, 2003, and her daughter, Pat Freitas, died July 24, 2009.
- She moved to Hughson, California, in June 2010, and met Raul Lopes there in 2011. They moved in together in June 2012 and lived together until 2014. She moved to Mooresville, North Carolina to be near her grandsons that same year.
- She is survived by two grandsons, Jayme Freitas, married to Sandy, and Kevin Freitas, married to Christina, and one granddaughter, Becca Freitas. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Joseph, Cecilia, Mary Claire, Jack, Josiah, and Eleanor, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
- A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, at 11:00 AM, at Atria Lake Norman, 140 Carriage Club Dr., Mooresville.
