- Christine Nelson, age 104, of Canby, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Sanford Canby Sylvan Court.
- Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11:00 am at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Janet Colby officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-7 pm at Birk Funeral Home in Canby and continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Canby City Cemetery.
- Christine was born May 17, 1905 in Fortier Township, Yellow Medicine County, the daughter of Jerry & Anna (Kankerlik) Schwartz. She attended the rural country school as a girl. On November 24, 1932, she married Eddie Nelson. The couple raised their family on the farm. Besides working on the farm, she worked at Swift's in Marshall for several years and eventually retired at the age of 65. In 1975, the couple moved off the farm to Canby. On April 1, 1982, Christine lost her husband of almost 50 years. She continued to live at her home until she entered the nursing home on August 9, 2008. In her sparetime, Christine enjoyed flowers, baking, cooking, quilting, watching people go by her home and spending time with her family. She has been a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church for many years which is where she loved to help out on quilting days.
- She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon Streich of Marietta, MN and Sandra Nelson of Canby; sister, Agnes Livermore of Watertown, SD; three grandchildren, Robert (Renee) Streich and Bruce Streich both of Marietta, MN and Brenda (Michael) Hoium of Watertown, SD; five great grandchildren, Joshua Streich (Kelinda Dill) of Clear Lake, SD, Kelly Streich (Michael Stearns) of Heckla, SD, Kacey Streich of Dawson, MN and Brenna Hoium & Hanna Hoium both of Watertown, SD; two great great grandchildren, Carter Anderson Streich of Dawson, MN and Rylynn Streich of Clear Lake, SD and many nieces, nephews and friends.
- She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eddie; son-in-law, Harold Streich; brother, Jerry; two sisters, Florence Pesek & Elsie Livermore.
